What is the value of this workshop to a small business or start-up company?
Completing this workshop will not make you an accountant, not even a bookkeeper. The value of this workshop is in learning the terminology of accountants and bookkeepers, so you can converse with them and understand what they are telling you. Aside from the professional help you may receive from a bookkeeper or accountant, you need to understand your business from a financial point of view. That requires reading financial statements and understanding what they tell you about the business. They are produced from the company’s books and records. Those records are maintained within the accounting system used by the company. That system uses terminology, concepts and principles not common to the general public in every day parlance. This is the basic premise for offering this workshop.
Disclaimer regarding accounting software: Later in this workshop, I will introduce you to accounting software. The program I am using for this purpose is QuickBooks, the 2006 version. This in no way should be considered a recommendation for that program. Included in your packet is a page from a website which lists and rates several accounting software programs. I have had experience with the first five, albeit not in their current versions. The versions I used were fine. However, with the free trials noted at the bottom of the page for the five selling at less than $500, picking a program that feels comfortable and useful for your business should not be difficult.
